The Putney House project involved demolition of an original residence that was poorly designed and blocked the site’s expansive views of the Paramatta river. The clients wanted to transform it into a sanctuary for two adults, a young teenager, two pets, and a future residence for ageing grandparents. The design approach was to build a classic family home with light, airy and functional spaces that accounted for a multitude of uses while creatively addressing the steeply sloping site and water views. Six-metre high timber and glass screens linking the winter courtyard to the main living space created a constantly changing shadow pattern between upper private to lower entertaining areas. The contemporary style was further explored using a traditional roof form with a modern twist: a surprising cut through the middle of the house leading to a central entry courtyard.
